Sometimes I feel like the discussion of fatphobia is hampered by the attempt to make "fat" a definite identity and not like, a label that gets applied situationally

like, I think a lot of social movements want to be like the US Black Civil Rights Movement, and so theres this focus on creating a defined "us" and "them." Like, "born this way" rhetoric about lgbt stuff serves the same function.

But like...peoples weight naturally fluctuates. The same person can be considered fat, chubby, or skinny, depending on who is judging them. The meaning of those judgments is very different in different social and professional environments.

We can't simply point to a neatly defined underclass of oppressed fat people and privileged thin people, like we have to accept that fatphobia is a more ambiguous form of discrimination.
